The story happened when my father’s grandmother, Susan Knable, was a girl. It seems she was looking out the window and saw some bigger boys climbing her father’s apple tree and stealing the apples.
“Hey, you boys go on now,” she yelled out to them. “My pap wants to make applesass out of those apples.”
“Well, you tell your pap to kiss my ass,” one of the boys replied. “That’ll make him good applesass!”
Their recipe might have been something like this:
4 Medium cooking apples, pared, quartered, and cored
1 c Water
½ c Brown sugar (packed)
¼ tsp Cinnamon
1/8 tsp Nutmeg
Heat apples and water over medium heat to boiling. Reduce hat; simmer, stirring occasionally, 5 to 10 minutes or until tender. Stir in brown sugar, cinnamon, and netmet; heat to boiling.
About 4 cups
